Safety on College Campuses

University

Earlier this year, I started a position as an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist at the University of Chicago, so Carol Schmeidler’s, MS, CSP, knowledge and experiences at the University of Buffalo will benefit fellow safety professionals at college campuses. She will be presenting Safety on College Campuses – Significant Challenges and Opportunities.

In many cases, new technology is developed on campuses and often sent to production before potential hazards are assessed. There are various exposures and hazards present during development. Policies and procedures need to be in place to be protected. Not to mention, campuses have a large variety of other hazards to contend with, including laboratories containing chemicals; biological and radiological materials; various vehicles – buses, cars, trucks, carts, scooters, bicycles and skateboards; buildings of varying ages and conditions; construction, both new and renovations – contractors, unions; roads, sidewalks and pathways; all while having a constant stream of employees, students and visitors.

Schmeidler’s presentation will utilize a combination of standards and examples, where there have been fatalities and severe injuries, to show how programs have been lacking, as well as examples of success stories where cooperation has been improved and atmospheres of safe work have become the norm rather than the exception.

Attendees can look forward to hearing how she instilled a culture of safety in the future workforce and established safe habits and work practices to gain support from administration and other campus employees.
